Where Heroes Dare
« on: 14 November 2009, 03:01:00 PM »
I just received my copy of this game, newly published from Iron Ivan games.  This was my first foray into the pulp era, apart from the free Savage Worlds Skirmish rules I tried a few months ago.   It looks very well-done, with some innovative ideas.  After reading the book and presenting the idea for a campaign to my gaming group, though, they expressed a preference to stick with a more sci-fi game with a smaller model count...so it's back to Necromunda for us and I have no use for this book.

I paid $20 plus $5 shipping for this volume.  It's near-mint:  I don't smoke and don't eat snacks while reading rulebooks!  I'll let it go for less.  PM me with an offer if interested.  We can deal directly or go through Bartertown or Ebay if you prefer.

Thanks,

Andy

Okay Andy, I'm game.  What do you want for the rules book?
I was thinking of getting it one of these days.  For me, it would be a bargain if I could pick it up for $17.50 including shipping.  I'm willing to negoiate.

I have been considering picking this game up myself. I am somewhat confused by what you indicate about model counts...
...they expressed a preference to stick with a more sci-fi game with a smaller model count...
I don't own the game (yet), but I was under the impression that "players may field as little as 3 figures". In your opinion, does this not appear to be the case afterall?

BTW, I can certainly appreciate wanting to play Necromundu. That game ROCKS!  :) :)

"players may field as little as 3 figures"

Depends on your style of play.  We have played games with 3 beefed up models per player or with teams of up to 30.  You can also play a game where you are only fielding 3 Lead Characters as your force, 195 pts each, against other teams like my 600 pt Kong Fang force that has 8 models in it and they will hold their own just as good so it comes down to how you use your points.

Hope that helps!

I loved Necromunda, we did a campaign in the late 90's that ended with all our built up gangs working together against a genestealer cult army.  Good Stuff!

I'm torn about these rules. I thought they were laid out weird, backwards. I think the sequence of the game and how mechanics work should be before all the fluff and skills. If I hadn't played Disposable Heroes a couple of times, I think I would have been lost. Couldn't even find the explanation about how the artillery charts work, I had to reread DH. There were a couple of places were they must have cut and pasted from their other rules because "Moxie" and "Courage" both were used.
That said, I'm excited to try them out. I've been looking for a set that will let me run bigger games. My group has a lot of people, and smaller scale rules just don't cut it.

Hey guys, I'll explain a few things and as always questions are welcome on the Yahoo group:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/ironivan/

Yep page 33 has Courage instead of Moxie, but there will always be a few typos :)  I'm going to put everything together into a Errata pdf as it arises.

The game itself is not Disposable Heroes nor Price of Glory but uses some of the same mechanics.  It is a stand alone system and although you can use the artillery tables from the other books, the one present in WHD! is a simplified version for the Pulp and Movie Serial genre, that is why there are no extensive tables, it is much more point and shoot, but feel free to use what you want for your games.

As for the rules layout, the focus is on the Characters in keeping with the genre of Pulp and Movie Serials as they are the stars of the show.  This is why the game play mechanics are placed after the Character Casting sections of the book.

Hope that helps!

So far the largest game I have run is with 8 players and we finished in about 2 1/2 hours to a conclusive end with lots of stories to share afterward.

Thanks,
Doc

My comment about artillery was that it doesn't really explain how the gun penetration chart works. The rules don't explain it till the vehicle section. That was an example of the layout I was mentioning. Rules get mentioned, but not explained until later.
