Big Battalion Franco-Prussian War game photos.
« on: 28 August 2023, 01:51:36 AM »
I hosted a Franco-Prussian War game for my club. Follow the link to my Flickr page for photos and a battle report. Please click where it says, faintly “show more” There you will find more information about the game. If you view each photo individually you will see commentary below some of the photos.

This is wonderful stuff, thanks for posting. Looking forward to getting home and giving it a proper look.

I've been thinking for a while about doing something battalion scale for FPW, er, in part so I can use the various lovely ranges that have come out (Perry, EoE).

Ideally I would like rules that capture the fire vs shock tactical choice at battalion level. How many men to feed into the firing line, how many to hold back formed up.

What I like about 15mm in this sort of conflict is that it allows more table space to play the larger battles. The Old Glory FPW range is their best work.

Your collection does look fantastic, although my soul was sold to 10mm a while ago...

Loved the album. Whoever laid those Prussian guns where they were should have been relegated to latrine duty!

I was surprised to see them limbered in the open, by an experienced player too. I just fired on them the first turn and took them all out. Left very few guns for the Prussians but if you look at the photos they still managed to take out the French guns. The Bavarians were under the command of a newbie to the rules. He covered up his guns with his own troops and I only remember him firing them once. IMO the Germans lost by mismanaging their artillery. They should have brought the guns on first, out of range of the French, and fired away. That is how the Prussians win battles. With their artillery. Artillery is everything to the Prussians.

Glad to see a French victory. And yep, I agree the German artillery is excellent but needs to be used early and often. Nice battlefield, great collections!

I do like this period, I'd love to do it in 15/10mm but I have a massive lead mountain to work my way through first, the Long Haired General says no more new projects lol
