Screw guns in the Sudan - how many camel loads?
« on: May 30, 2024, 12:03:22 PM »
The only picture I can find of the arrangement is a plastic model/toy where two camels carry the 7 pounder screw gun. One carries the carriage, the other other carries the gun between the two wheels - the wheels slung on either side of the camel with the gun resting on top of the saddle ‘tree’ (is it called a saddle tree? my memory these days).

Is this the correct arrangement? I had suspected three camels with the carriage, wheels and gun as separate loads.

The Camel Corps in the Sudan in the 1880's carried 2.5" RML Screw Guns and used them at Abu Klea and Ginnis. The gun broke down into 4 loads each of 200 lb - barrel front, barrel rear, carriage and both wheels.  It took six camels to service one gun and its ammunition.

That’s brilliant info, thanks.

But, I think I’ll go for three camels, so they can all go on one base, staggered front to back to shorten it to around 100mm: Artistic license and cost.
