Printing PDF rules - how does it work?

Just wondering what the law is in the UK. I understand print on demand but what are the rules around buying a PDF set of rules and geting a printing company to print and bind them, also can I as for more than 1 copy

Your in the "fair usage" area

if its for your personal usage, based on your personal copy, ok.

if its for others, then they should also be purchasing at least the pdf version etc.

Fair is fair, no shares or profiting off someone else's work as such. no 500 book print runs and selling etc.

Most pdf publishers now are starting to include outlines in regards how they consider fair usage/personal printing permissions related to their electronic book versions.

I'm looking for a couple of hard copies, one to keep the other to use so hopefully that's OK, I'll take a look what I'm after is on drivethru

Check the T&Cs on the PDF as well - I've not come across a PDF that limits you to the number you can print but it may happen one day.


As for printing, I've had excellent service (over many years) from https://www.doxdirect.com/
A couple of things I would say are:

• I pay extra for slightly thicker paper as I find 80gsm flimsy when I'm using the rulesI always add an opaque cover - you can still see the front page fine but you do not get any static (esp handy if your flock sheds).
• Use the spiral binder option if you want the rules to lay flat on the table in use
• Consider using different colours of binder to split fantasy / sci fi rule sets etc. The only drawback with the spiral is that you cannot put rule names on the spine.
