Shrubberies?

Hey,

I am slowly building up my Old West terrain and it's getting better and better. But the thing I am really missing is shrubs! Whenever I search for images of the old west (or when my MacOs screensaver fires up) I see a lot of green shrubs dotting the landscape. So not only cacti, but all kinds of cool bushes.
What kind of model plants do you use for these bushes? I hope to find something that looks cool, can be placed as individual bushes (so you can vary where you place them) and is not too fragile. Any tips?

I use patches of rubberised horse hair which has been flocked accordingly and put on small bases.

We love a weird hobby, when you think about it.  Now I have to go look for some.

For sagebrush I use grey lichen that I then coat the top with Elmer's clear glue and then dust with a sage (pale gray-green) flock that I made.  I mount each piece to a 3/4 inch washer with a brown gravel base highlighted to a dusty tan and add some bunch grass, fallen log (grey and sun bleached), or other bits.

Rubberized horsehair is my go to also.  Furnace filters will work but the horse hair tends to wear better.  To get the flocking or sawdust to stick have a look at clear plastidip.  It is a clear spray on rubber and it adheres and wears better than normal glues.

I grew up in Arizona and , depending on the terrain, there are more bushes than cactus.  If you search for images of Creosote bushes, sage, Palo Verde Trees and mesquite trees it will help you get some ideas.  Those bushes and trees will be a good fit from Texas to California.

Thanks man! That's excellent tips on the plants. And for the flock I think I will use latex rubber. I have a big bottle of the stuff and it works well to stick and seal the stuff.

I create my own from floral stems collected from big box craft stores (Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Joann, etc.), plus some commercially available saguaros.
