Simple and effective. 

Though I have a long-standing quibble with such movement trays - when you take a figure out you are left with a 'glaring' spot of a different color/texture.  Simple fix, a little paint (beyond the primer) - in the tutorial example just a dry brush of brown and green would do the trick.  Maybe not 'artistic' but it reduces that 'glare' of the empty spot.

The ‘holes’ have been painted and drybrushed the same colours as the rest of the tray, it’s just not that apparent in the photos.

One question though, James; the bases are acrylic, I assume lasercut? So the top and bottom circumfences should match pretty much exactly. But there's still a visible gap between the two parts of the base; does the cutting process leave a bit of a bevel in the acrylic perhaps through melting?

No worries Ruben  They're lasercut acrylic and they are assembled before being posted but these two are ones for myself which didn't pass muster (stuck slightly out of alignment) which is why I used them.

The laser does burn away material and it burns more at the top of a cut (called the kerf) so the thicker the material the more pronounced the kerf. For 2mm it's around 0.1-0.2mm from perpendicular. It's less so on mdf but still present but I'm not really set up for mass mdf cutting.

I'll be looking out for that. I have a hankering to make a Japanese story in the future on my pulp models. However, being married to a Japanese I will have to get it right...
