Roman legionnaries vs skeletons !! Which ruleset?
« on: 21 August 2024, 10:41:01 AM »
Hello,
I have some 28mm Romans and my son has a Warhammer skeletons army.

Now, let's play together. But which ruleset? We'd prefer skirmish type.

Thanks for your help.

When it comes to skirmish, I cannot recommend Song of Blades and Heroes highly enough, it's simple & reasonably priced.

At a few figures aside level, Fistful of Lead (which has a fantasy set of books) or the Ganesha games rules (who’s name escapes me).

A few units a side Saga Age of Magic or Dragon Rampant

An army a side, Kings or War, or even Warhammer - you could proxy the Romans or get one of the older historical books

Dragon Rampant. Dead easy to stat the armies up and pretty easy mechanics. You can play with reduced model units if you want fewer troops on the table or you can play with full size units (6 or 12 models per unit depending on troop type)
Play with 36pts per side as it's better than the 24 recommended in the rules, esp if you're using magic (IMHO).
My son used to play the rules with me from about age 7 until he got 'too cool to wargame'...fun times!
Have fun!

You can also use Broken Legions from Osprey. It's a fun skirmish game with small warbands.  :)

Kings of War has a historical army book too which is fully compatible with their fantasy stuff- I just use that for the Romans vs fantasy stuff battles.

Just recommended this recently in a Medieval thread:

Melee, the combat component of The Fantasy Trip RPG, works great for quick fun skirmish games.

I agree, used it many times with my son (when he was a child) for any scenario/period/figures, easy to learn, higly customizable and lot of fun.
And I still use it after +15years, all the "Song of" series are nice for skirmish games (5->20 figures)   :-*
