Rural Chinese Granary/Barn
« on: 09 August 2024, 11:48:54 AM »
I have been working on some additional Chinese terrain for a new campaign. This is a building that I have conceptualized as a central granary or a barn for a rural Chinese village. It is not based on any research or historical photographs. It just makes sense to me (and therefore is probably wrong). A friend of mine sent this 3D printed building. It had good bones for what I wanted, perhaps a bit dark ages but close enough. I didn't like that it had a plank roof and I decided to thatch it with some toweling. The first layer was too "flat" but I was fairly pleased with two. The next things that had to change were the doors and windows. I actually modeled the door frames first, then worked on the doors and inserted them in the frames. Both the doors and the windows were scratch built out of my balsa lumber yard. Anyway, I am satisfied that the building is ready to be primed and then painted.

Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

Well, a new concept for me - modifying 3D prints, opens a new set of possibilities I suppose.

Yes, does look good.  But.  I'd recommend a little gap filling at the bottom of the doors and the bottom of the left hand window to door meeting point and, especially, the bottom right of the right hand window, pretty big gap there.  Of course, you could leave as is and just paint and hope not so noticeable or maybe you want that extra rustic look.  Just those elements stood out to me.  The back window works as is.

And it just may be that the view enlarged overly accentuates what I am seeing and in person they are much less noticeable.

Thanks fellas. I appreciate the comments 15s. I may do some filling based on them. I don't mind the rustic/worn appearance. This is supposed to be deployed in my most rural settings. Looking at historical pictures of Chinese rural buildings over the years, maintenance does not seem to have been much of a priority  lol lol However, at least one of the gaps that you pointed out offends my aesthetics. Thanks again.

We are in the middle of the rainy season right now and there was a break in the rain. So, I decided that I needed to take advantage of the break to spray prime the building. Rustic it will be! I really did want to fill in some gaps 15s but wasn't sure how long that I would have to wait before I could prime the building.

No worries.  Reality is once painted and in a game the focus is likely more on the game than the 'componenets' so probably won't matter anyway.  I'm just glad you put me in mind of modifying 3D prints.  Who knows where that will take me!?

Lovely job. I like the bamboo (?) in the walled enclosure. What is the story about that?
