Metal movement trays - material ideas
« on: 26 September 2024, 03:25:01 PM »
I do all of my miniatures with magnets below their bases. Then I make metal plated movement trays so they could hold to them well. I like that solution very much.

To do the movement trays I use Metal Sheet Galvanised Steel Smooth Flat Stock 0.5mm Thickness.

The final effect is really very, very good. I am satisfied with it. However, there is some work to be done I don’t particularly like, I use my dad’s metal grinder, then his electric sander to smooth down the edges. When I cut the metal, all the neighbourhood probably thinks I’m opening some sort of workshop.

So, I’m writing this post to ask if someone could advise me some alternative. A readymade metal part that I could purchase in a good size, some, plates used for something that could be found in mechanical store. I believe there may be some part that has its specific name, that is used for something in whatever industry, that may be very cheap but I don’t know about it. The only thing is that I want it to be thin, preferably 0.5mm or less. Does anyone have any idea?

U.K. based? If so, I can recommend Precision Wargames Supplies. However, they use 20 gauge (so, 0.9mm) galvanised steel and I don’t think they’re particularly cheap. That said, they will make custom sizes and might be willing to use thinner steel.

If you are in the US, I have purchased metal movement trays from http://shogunminiatures.com

I happen to have extra trays of various sizes from them that I would part with for shipping only if you like what they have.
