ACW tourism: Nashville to Atlanta
« on: 14 December 2024, 09:19:58 PM »
Last month I had the pleasure of five days touring six battlefields between Nashville and Atlanta. These will be familiar to many readers of this forum but not to all. I've done a blog post, not as a comprehensive travelogue/guidebook, but as a taster to encourage others to explore this tract of territory that is so rich in Civil War History, hence I hope a light read and not too long:

ACW tourists - remember that marching is mandatory while in Georgia.

That's true - it's a bloody long walk through the Atlanta airport terminal.

Nice blog.  I've been to Chattanooga, Chickamauga, and Stones River.

Kennesaw Mountain and Resaca may be in the cards this spring, when my brother and I will be knocking around central(ish) Georgia...

Thanks, CapnJim. I hope your Georgia expedition happens and you have a great time. If you do go to Kennesaw Mountain and Resaca, be prepared to do some walking and climbing.

One thing you did not mention seeing was the Andersonville Prison, cemetery and nearby POW National Museum located in Andersonville, Georgia about 100 miles south of Atlanta. Andersonville also has a small ACW museum wirh donation as an entry fee. My wife and I visited all of these 2 years ago in Early December. It was a very slobbering experience. The little museum had a 1/72 (maybe a bit smaller) small scale diorama as well as artifacts from the prison and the war itself. We watched an episode on America's Prisons just a couple of weeks ago on the History Channel and it was all about Anersonville Prison.

Thanks for the tip, Hitman. Andersonville wasn't on our route this time, but clearly worth a visit.

Thanks much for the travel blog! I thought I knew all the big battles of the ACW but somehow Resaca slipped right by me. Now it's on the bucket list to visit.

You're welcome, Lascaris. Yes, Resaca is surprisingly invisible!
