Looking for some ideas for boarding pikes and other pole arms
« on: December 16, 2024, 06:43:37 PM »
I have a long simmering goblin pirate project that's taken over my desk again.  I have armed the goblins with muskets, pistols, cutlasses, swords, and even the odd rapier and saber.  There's cleavers and clubs, obviously. The problem is with the pole arms or spears.

Spears don't look right.  I'd like to at least mix it up by tossing in a few boarding pikes.  Problem is ... I can't find a good source of boarding pikes that aren't attached to a $12 pirate figure I'd hate to cut up.  These guys are mostly plastic from a variety of manufacturers (GW, Oathmark, Warlord, and Wargames Atlantic, with some resin and a few metal Reaper and Black Cat bases?).  I don't mind the odd unique pole arm, ala some man catchers.  I do not have a 3d printer, but have friends who have both resin and the um ... other type?

I'd also take suggestions for other weapons that I'm missing.  Would love some belaying pins and such, but haven't found a plastic source that is the right 28mm(ish) size.

Anyone have an idea of where to get some pole arm type weapons, especially boarding pikes, that I can chop up without spending a billion dollars? I'm trying to get a few 'hooks' stuck to some spears to look ok, but my greenstuff skills are lacking.

Not quite 'boarding pike' but Perry Miniatures has WotR billhooks.  I don't imagine you'll need 36 of them, though!

What does a boarding pike look like? Many of us will have many spare ‘bill’ arms and weapons from the plastic Perry WoTR kits - which might be a bit more practical to acquire and convert than a pile of metal ones!

This is kind of what I was calling a boarding pike.  Not sure what else to call it.

Cool - not sure if it is a variation of a boat hook, or is purely a weapon.

There are some of the plastic perry WoTR bills that are similar to the metal ones Will posted - and could probably be cut down to this simpler shape fairly easily. I might have some - but will need to have a rummage, to find out where I have put them.

Boarding pikes varied greatly but most were mainly pointy.  I think what you are looking for is a gaff or a boat-hook.
Maybe modify some spears by adding the hook on the side.

Yeah, boarding pikes were a bit like boar spears - shortish but with heavy straight blades. But anything nasty was used - boat and gaff hooks, cutlasses of course, boarding axes, cleavers, you name it. But there is something essentially nautical-looking about a harpoon-looking thingy, something with a hook on it. The bill hook pack is probably a good shout and you will no doubt have fun chopping, trimming and turning them about to get the right shape.
