Game of Thrones Miniatures Game
« on: March 26, 2025, 03:18:28 AM »
This game from Knight Models was highly anticipated but appears to have received a fairly muted reception since publication (to the extent that I'm not even sure whether this was last year or 2023). I watched a review on YouTube some time last year which was highly favourable towards the game and its miniatures (which appear to be in some kind of thermoplastic) but it doesn't seem to have really entered the discourse. (At any rate I don't recall it being even mentioned either on LAF or any of the various miniatures-focused YouTube channels I subscribe to).

I know the game requires use of an app, which will be a turn-off for some, even assuming it works as intended (regarding which I've heard nothing). I'm also aware the publisher has its critics for some of its past decisions but given the continuing wide enthusiasm for the IP I would expect rather more interest - or at least curiosity - in a miniatures game devoted to it (though I suppose it's possible that I have somehow remained oblivious to this).

Does anyone have any experience with the game, or any insights into its apparent failure to gain traction in what is admittedly a fairly crowded market?

Had no idea it was even a thing.  I know CMON has been 'relatively' successful with their Song of Ice and Fire game.  Knights seems to snag big IPs...makes underwhelming games with eye-wateringly expensive miniature, and then they fall off.

I've never seen a Knight game be considered really mainstream.  Be curious to see what people think of it.

Yes that seems to match my experience. When I worked in a flgs their superhero games had a few good months of play but then they just kind of stopped bothering with them, so the games died off.

Hmm...I'm curious as to which store you worked in as I have reason to believe we are not too remote in a geographical sense. Our county, and in particular its major conurbation, is not noted for its wealth of hobby stores, the latter being more generally associated with a perennially relegation-bound football team.

I've delved a little further into YouTube for discussion of the game but so far have found only one substantial review, which I have yet to watch, the others mainly being unboxings. One I watched last night was scathing about the miniatures - not because of the sculpting, which appears excellent, but the brittleness of the material - a plastic resin - and the complexity of the assembly. The reviewer showed a mass of broken parts that he had accrued. He has informed Knight Models if the problem and they had asked him what replacements he needed. His reply was 'everything', which at the time the video had been posted, had not been provided. On the other hand, I also watched a video about painting the Night's Watch faction, which mentioned no problems at all and they looked very good.

Steer clear of this company and its games. I bought their Batman miniatures game books which were okay and a number of packs of their figures. The metals used were very flimsy and broke during shipping, or when painting them.

The Game of Thrones figures are now stl files which you
need to purchase and then print on your own.

Their Harry Potter gamefound platforms were a mess and their current Batman: Escape From Arkham Asylum is an utter disaster. I initially backed the Batman Arkham game as it appeared to be a great concept with some great lookin
g miniatures. Unfortunately as it was supposed to have been delivered last year with the last substantial update almost a year ago, no communication, lack of progress, etc., people started demanding refunds, myself included. I was one of the last to receive a partial refund (less Gamefound's 10% fee) and am very glad I bailed as many people are still demanding to get their refunds back. Most of them have been demanding for months and are being ignored.

In short, I like many others believe that Knight Games or Knight  Models or whatever they call themselves are in financial trouble or are really too lazy to care when dealing with customer concerns or customer support. I will never
buy another thing from this company, and like many others, realize that if you get into the Game of Thrones or any other of their games, you will never see support for it. If you like the GoT IP, go buy the CMON Games figures. They are great, paint up wonderfully and the game is a lot of fun. I also use these figures with other rule sets like Lion Ramoant, the Barons War, etc.

By the way, many who backed their Arkham game have never dropped out of a crowdfunding project before. This was my first.also, a lack of substantive information on the game, it's figures, etc. should raise huge alarm bells for you. I for one would never get involved with KG/KM.

Good luck in your decision. Just be prepared for the worse if you go ahead and get into their game.
Victory is guaranteed to the last man standing, but always remember those whom you stepped on to get there!!

Thank you for that information, Hitman. I wasn't aware of the problems with the Batman Gamefound campaign though unfortunately these issues are not that uncommon.

My only personal experience with Knight Models is of the early Batman releases - I have the core rules in two versions, though I've never been able to establish whether the one in comic book format constitutes a second edition - and have only two packs of the models, both in metal (Batgirl, which I've not assembled, as it looked too difficult, and a pair of henchmen, which were straightforward.) I don't think I've seen the plastic-resin models, though I did buy a unicorn from their Harry Potter game, which I assume is in the same or a similar material. (The fact that I broke the tail off it is doubtless attributable at least as much to my clumsiness as to any defects in the model.)

I wasn't aware that they'd shifted to STL's for the miniatures. I don't have a 3D printer and don't plan on getting one though it's not a deal breaker in itself. Nevertheless, in view of your experience and advice I will end my interest in GoTMG, at least until the company ups its game and earns my confidence. Thank you again.

Speaking of games that rely on STL's, another has recently come to my attention. I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts on this but will open a new thread to avoid confusion. (Hint: it's the new edition of Hate, currently being crowd-funded).

I'm glad I could provide you with useful information. Several of the metal Batman:Suicide Squad set wete missong mwtal bits or were broken on the sprues. I figured qhen the offered the Arkham Escape in plastic I would crowdfund that game, but alas, that game appears dead in the water. Good luck with your projects.

The comment about the Suicide Squad box reminds me of an unboxing video for some  Knight Models figures I watched a couple of years ago in which at least one box turned out to be empty. I don't remember the specific sets or the channel but the reviewer was, understandably, somewhat displeased and also unimpressed with the company's response as I recall. I have the impression that their commitment to customer satisfaction and receptiveness to feedback is not all it could be.
