Brave Battalions of Sprueburg - how-to-play video
« on: January 20, 2025, 03:55:20 PM »
Hi everybody, I'm going to release this game I wrote with a XIX century fictional Europe as a setting - Imaginations, some may say.
It's a little game that you can download at WGV (pay what you want). https://www.wargamevault.com/product/511371/Brave-Battalions-of-Sprueburg?term=sprueburg

I post a teaser here: all the rules and the mission zero.
It is a game to be played on a tiled board, 10x8 tiles large, with some terrain and miniatures on it.
I hope some of you will download it and maybe even try to play it.

I also have a "how to play" video: https://youtu.be/lN_R3kp58EM?si=P630-LOpt-senEYT

Have fun,

AC

Hi there, I've finally put together a game of Brave Battalions of Sprueburg, you can see how the deployment is done by putting face down poker cards on the tiled board, some 2D terrain I've done, and some action going on. I hope you give the free rules a shot.
Bye!

Thanks for sharing.

I like the activation mechanism - an interesting approach. I’ve not got through the combat sections yet!

Hi Fred, thanks a lot. I seem to recall that activation mechanic was there in the first Confrontation fantasy skirmish miniature game, but the Command Phase, that allows you to "save" the activation of one of your units, and even make it more decisive, kind of help keeping the game less chancey. I love the lack of control in activations, be it a PIP mechanic like DBx or a "push your own luck" thing like Lion Rampant or Song of Blades, or Blucher or many others. Yet I think this combination of randomness and control that happens here in Sprueburg is kind of novel. To me at last!

Hi, we've been playing scenario 1 with a friend, and the game showed some of its potential.

The game tells a moment in our story, where the generals are ready to set off for the Zinnville Annexation War, the next day. Sitting on their embroidered ottomanas and sipping a strong punch, they narrate an old battle that occurred a decade ago between the Duchy of St.Mould and the Municipality of Sprueburg. Ah, those were times! Our hair was still pitch-black and curly mustaches were all the rage!

This is scenario zero, you can play it how many times you need to get the grip of the rules, and will have no consequence on the evolving story of the campaign.

Pic 1 shows the initial situation on St.Mould's right: the central infantry unit is slow to catch up with the line (due to card-driven activation) and is heavily smitten by Sprueburger artillery, while some cavalry superiority threatens St. Mould's right.
Pic 2 shows St. Mould's cavalry beaten, and a hook on its way! (players can choose one unit to be "commanded" each turn with a secret order, this will boost the activation and power of that unit for this turn, very useful to chose where your drive will be on your next move).
Pic 3 shows the other side of the battlefield, where two light infantry units are exchanging long range shots to dominate the wooded hills and nearby town (light troops are basically terrain troops in these rules).
Pic 4 unfortunate timing! The end-of-turd deck shows the artillery reserve is showing up, but Sprueburg penetrated so deeply int St.Mould's lines that the road is proving to be useless, and the artillery is stuck to its starting tile! (Reserve units are drawn from the clock deck, and when they show up they can travel along the road as long as you like before being deployed, it is vital to keep roads open and safe!).

Tha game lasted about one hour with minimal setup and book keeping.
You can download the game as a pay-what-you want from Wargames Vault: https://www.wargamevault.com/product/511371/Brave-Battalions-of-Sprueburg

Just purchased from Wargames Vault, now to paint up some 10mm RISK armies for me and my brother. Love the idea of the linked-scenarios campaign, looking forward to trying it.

Thank you! The Risk-pieces are a great source of perfect old fashioned one-pose Horse and Musket fun.
I hope you enjoy the scenarios, that is my favourite bit.

I do hope it is! I have the same vibe as looking at the cover of Sgt. Pepper's, if you know what I mean. No comparison possible with the pinnacle of XX century creativity, of course, just a vibe.

More BBoS goodness from the Bassano del Grappa Italian group! They're running a six-players campaign right now.
