Returning to 6mm fantasy
« on: May 23, 2025, 10:49:11 PM »
I've had a few attempts at 6mm fantasy wargaming over the years starting with large 6mm armies using Chipco Fantasy Rules 2! and 3! https://6mm.wargaming.info/page1.shtml and then more recently I tried 6mm skirmish with Songs of Blades and Heroes (here https://6mmwargaming.home.blog/2023/09/08/fantasy-warbands-for-sobh/ ).

Now I'm looking for some thing in the middle and going back to unit bases, but smaller than my original 40mm square bases used for FR3. I've settled on 25mm square bases which gives me enough space for a reasonable amount of figures but it means I can play on smaller table and with bigger armies. I also considered 20mm and 30mm sized bases but I could spend months deciding and still not be happy!

I still own the Chipco FR2! and FR3! rules and I recently purchased Fantastic battles so I'm sorted for mass battle rules. I can also use the figures for skirmish games with a base of figures replacing a single 28mm skirmish model.

I've rebased my 6mm Dragon Knights from Perfect Six onto 25mm and I'm working on my 6mm Wood Elves and Orcs, but I don't have enough of any for an army yet, but here's the first Dragon Knight units.

They are pretty hefty figures especially the foot so I went with 4 figures per rank and 2 ranks. I wanted them to look like well disciplined units so I based them in well ordered lines but for Orcs and others I make them more of an irregular blob shape on the base. The mounted knights I staggered in a slight wedge formation and managed to squeeze 5 onto a base and I'll create different formations with of my other foot knights.

They're not the greatest photos but hopefully you get the idea, and I'm happy with the result.

I remember the Chipco rules fondly. Fun set of rules until the local players started min-maxing their army lists...

I rebased my 25mm fantasy figures onto 60mm square bases for Fantasy Rules (2nd edition, as I recall) and then drifted off to other projects for a while.  We’ve been playing some Fantastic Battles with 6s lately, so that seems like a good choice…

Thanks. I've almost finished rebasing and touching up my 6mm Dragon Knights. I want to add some lighter troops to the army and my Microworld games should fill those gaps. Next up I'm painting the Perfect Six Orcs I have before the rest of the horde arrives from MW.

Heavy Crossbow (excuse the crappy photo)

Axemen

Knights and MW peasants

Command stands (need to add flags)

Steam Tank (25x30mm base)

I've managed to rebase my painted wood elves and I also placed a reasonable order to Microworld games for more Elves, Humans and lots of Orcs/Goblins. I've added another 700 figures or a almost another years worth of painting!

Bow

Spear

Also my order of the Fantastic battles rules turned up and I am very impressed. And I picked up these Age of Sigmar cards which look like they will adapt well to the rules or they will be useful for other games.

I have the fantastic battles rules as well - I do rate them highly as a rule set, but haven't really tried HoTT or DBF as a comparison.
Lovely figures though.

Rebasing 6mm troops must be tricky

My bases are all plasticard, and I use caulk for the ground cover and PVA to glue the figures down, so I can soak them in water to loose them and they pop off pretty easy. But there's always some minor touchups required.

Simply stunning!

I too will be heading back to 6mm fantasy this year, I just need to sort of the games room and get a mat...

Pretty sure I will stick with Battlesystem, as I love rolling masses of dice....

You might recognised some of the minis....

Looking forward to more!
