Venus or Cytherea?
« on: March 03, 2011, 07:53:44 PM »
So what should we be calling the planet Venus and her inhabitants in the 19th century?

Venus and Venusians or Cytherea and Cythereans?

Similarly, what words would other nations use, in particular the French and Germans?

The proper term for something coming from Venus is Venerean, not Venusians.  & since Vernerean is close to Venereal, scientists decided to come up with another name.  How they decided on Cytherea is even more convoluted, but you can read about it here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytherean

So, since Cytherea was the common name during the Victorian period, we decided to use that.

The Victorian view was to refer to the planet as Venus but all things referencing it were Cytherean after the island from which Aphrodite appeared. The term that pertains to Venus would be Venerean and that was considered a bit to close to Venereal for Victorian morals. There is a good little write up in wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytherean

I don't know what the Prussian's would use but I'm sure it would be pronounced with a "W" sound replacing the "V".

So if we are using Cytherea, I guess my Frenchies will use the term Cytherien for indigenous races.

Well I never knew that  :o  Fantastic, I love learning new stuff.

Cythereans it is for me then  :D

I always thought the "Wuh" sound was quite hard for Germans to pronounce correctly, due to it not being used in their language, hence all the "Vot do you vont" cliches in all the hammy old films  :?

Or have I got it totallly wrong and made a complete arse of myself (again)?  lol lol

All I know is that the makers of a famous petroleum jelly product had to change the spelling of their company's name to Wicks in order to get it sold in Germany.

Kind of like Gerber losing sales of baby food in some underdeveloped countries because in those countries the contents of a container are depicted on the label.

If you don't like either of those, Venus has also been called Lucifer (Morning Star) and Hesperus (Evening Star).

Morning star - Morgenstern. Hmmm, that has a nice Germanic ring to it  :)

Is there such a thing as an Abendstern? Doesn't sound quite so good somehow.

Abendstern sounds like some obscure Nautical heraldry term.

In german V is pronouce as f and W is prounounced as v.  So the petrouleum jelly product in German would be prounounced FICKS,  The planet venus would be prouncounce FENUS.

Hostile natives of venus would be blue wogs or BOGS
Hostile Cytherians would be COGS
