Rif Wars: Book Recommendation
« on: 08 January 2011, 09:04:32 PM »
For any of you gaming the Rif Wars I can highly recommend Blocaos: Vida y Muerte en Marruecos by Juan Garcia del Rio Fernandez and Carlos Gonzalez Rosado.  It's in Spanish of course, but even if you don't read Spanish, it is loaded with great period photographs, particularly of the many isolated posts (blocaos) that played such a key role in this fascinating conflict.

Thanks for that Joseph, it's always good to get recommendations for books that don't get translated from Spanish (or indeed other languages) and so remain obscure to us non-Spaniards.

My pleasure Jim.  I'll rub it in a little more by saying that I actually have the joy of gaming the Rif Wars while residing in Morocco.  So I'm inspired everyday with painting and terrain ideas.

The authors of the book are associated with the Regimental museum of the Regulares de Ceuta No. 54 and had access to many previously unpublished photos from the wars.  I was particularly interested in it for terrain ideas to model a blocao for some upcoming scenarios.  One of these days I hope to be able to visit some of the sites of these posts to see what, if anything, remains.  Several weeks ago we took a trip to Ceuta.  On the way home we passed a large ruin that I thought looked interesting, but didn't stop.  I kicked myself later when I realized it was the former Spanish Legion headquarters at Dar Riffian.  Justification for another trip I guess!

Cheers.

Yes you're rubbing it in...  ;)

If you happen to find anything of interest and feel the urge to take some pics, feel free to put them up. We have one or two folk that are interested in the period, including Marco from Rif-Raf Miniatures, so they would be gratefully received.

Hello there chaps....I just picked up on this topic.  Been a bit distracted with work, lol :) It's definitely something of interest, especially when it has lots of photos for reference purposes.  It would be nice to have a few more books on this very interesting subject, translated into English.   The only thing I have, is the Betrothed of Death.....though, I must say, it's not a bad little gem of a book :)
