Basalt field for a pulp game?

I want to make something like this for a pulp game, but have no idea where to start:



Does anyone have any suggestions or great ideas on how I could make it?

I want small basalt rock pillars for small scenery (CD sized base) and a bigger piece as a main feature for the table.

I'd try some pink or blue foam if you have access to it.  Cut a length of it the size you want and cut it up into uneven sizes.  Add some nicks here and there and bunch them up together.

The basalt generally crystalizes in a hex shape, so I would go with cut sections of standard pencils along with the pink foam Big Sexy mentioned.

It's got to be one of the  weirdest natural formations on the planet. I've been to Fingals Cave and I felt like I was walking some Chtuluesque n-th dimensional plane.

I will start by saying that this is NOT an original idea - I've seen it somewhere.

Make a blue foam master of a hexagonal column, make it as accurate as possible.

Make latex moulds of sections of the columns - anywhere between 3 - 8 inches long.

Make plaster casts using the latex moulds, then distress each of the sections and vary the height. (You should be easily able to cut these sections with a standard saw).

Glue to a baseboard with uPVA glue and paint.

A far easier option: The Heroscape game board is built using hex shaped pieces and you can usually find the board pieces on ebay. Stack 'em, glue 'em and paint 'em.
