Hi,

The following presents an intresting alternative to VBCW for alt history 30s wargames.

Ok, i admit it, i'd pay good money to see a tabletop Rotherham* levelled in AVBCW...

That comes under 'Civic Improvements' surely...  :?

 ;)

I don't honestly "get" VBCW [or any other ImagiNation etc] when there's the real thing to game/study in the SCW. I'm probably lacking in something

Just my £0.02 before the others jump on me  :)

James

There should be no reason for anyone to jump on anyone, merely for liking/disliking anything. You're right too, just on its own the SCW has enough to keep anyone occupied for much of their wargaming life. The same is of course true of many periods.

As for the "getting" of VBCW, you do or you don't and even amongst those that do, there are myriad different reasons for its appeal. As it stands it's not for me either. I'd be looking for something similar for a 'what if?', but not the same, if that makes sense? I was kidding about AVSSCW, changing an existing war into something else seems somehow wrong... It was the absurdity of taking something that was fine as it was and changing it for the sake of it, that appealed for that post.

Besides my obvious historical interests, I do enjoy alternate history and imagi-nations and I'm constantly pottering with them. For me there has to be some credibility to them, so if it doesn't feel right or isn't believable to me, how is it likely to be convincing to someone else?

As you say though, we're all different, I don't have any interest whatsoever in Elves, Orcs or Goblins, nor do I wish to battle beyond the stars... yet I'll do zombies, imaginary wars and post-apocalypse... go figure.

Now that's what I'm talking about! That's pretty much what I had in mind... There's also a thread on Alt.History somewhere, about a right-wing France developing in 1935. It got a bit far-fetched pretty quick, but some of the ideas were good.

More power to you then

But, and i appreciate that I may be on dodgy ground given that it looks like that you're Spanish, please not in Spain.

Nope, I'm with you here James, I find the VBCW thing difficult to get into, as I can't see the actual thing ever happening at the time. Spain however is a whole different story, and the the more you study, the deeper the whole thing gets.

I think we all probably game "what if's" on occassion.

I'll leave it at that; i'm not knocking the AVBCW boys i just honestly don't see the attraction when there's history to go at

Anyway ... i'll get that Gladiator painted up when i get round to tackling the Panzer 1s and T26s that i bought to finish off my SCW project.

Good gaming gentlemen, whatever that may be

Salude!

Just out of interest, if you're looking for a representative Republican fighter of the early war, there are a few kits of the Azure NiD-52 in 1/72 floating about. A Breguet XIX would have been better, but nobody seems to make one.

Thanks for that chap

I'm only going to do the one plane for the SCW. So if i can find an Azure NiD-52, a Bristol Bulldog or something Russian! between now and restarting the vehicle project i will & then donate the Gladiator on here

Could i just check on the best scale to use with 28mm figures. I appreciate that its a question of perspective (it will be above the battlefield on a stand). What would look best?

Cheers,

James

If you're only going to use it in flying mode, 1/72 looks great. James Morris did that for his Abyssinia collection, and it is far more convincing than 1/48.

I personally prefer 1/50 or 1/48, but that is mainly due to the fact that I always want the items to be used "on the ground" as well (e.g. as a scenario objective); in that case, it doesn't hurt (IMHO) if the plane is a little bit larger than the minis.

Mr Morris you say. I'll have to take note of his Abyssinian [Italian?] Air Force next time he brings them to the WH club in Notts   :)

1:72 it is then - thank you

I can't say either way, but apparently aircraft in a smaller scale do give the impression of being higher off the table than they are... you'd think it would be the other way around though.

 :?

Still as most aircraft kits are 1/72, which is equal to a figure height of 25mm (6' or 185cm real person... feet to top of head) it's not so far off anyway, as opposed to 1/48, which would give a figure height of 38mm. So logically 1/72 is the closest by a shade.

Thanks Arlequin.

I think it will look fine. A friend of mine games aircraft using telescopic aerials which is quite snazzy.

I'll have to tap him for ideas.

Ah yes, the old scale quagmire. I guess it's a matter of personal taste, and of the figures you combine the aircraft (and, by extension, vehicles) with - I'm quite happy with myy P-26 in 1/48 scale for my Anglian/Empress SCW Republicans, but I would instantly use 1/72 with my Rif War Spanish, as those are far more slender, less bulky, and a bit shorter - there, the 1/72nds would work well on the ground, too.
