Date for the plastic Teutonic Knights

  I did a google and apparently they were used accoridng to armour makers of today since 1220 so you are right as that was late 12th century

I think they would, yes. The Saraccen use of barding seems well documented so I don't know why the Franks would not use it.

It looks like the barrel and sugarloaf great helmet was a thing of the second and third crusade to, darn it!

Face plates were around for the Third Crusade (and maybe proto great helms, but these would have been very, very rare indeed).

Barding was just coming into use by the time of the Third Crusade, but it is not mentioned in any of the primary sources.

The helmets and leg armour on the knights place these figures early to mid thirteenth century. LTD's 1220 would be at the very front end of that.

the first cylinder-shaped helms (not the great helm) were used after the 3rd crusade.

This is not so black and white Olivier as Richard used his first Great Seal of 1189 during the Third Crusade.

Contrary to some of the hand drawn interpretations on the internet, some actual impressions of Richard's seal of 1189 indicate the use of a helmet that has either a face plate or is an early form of full helm.

It's not so easy to make out on this image, but I've handled a few of the real thing and it's open to discussion.



Surviving carvings indicate face plates/visors in use by Normans in Byzantine service as early as the eleventh century - some of which are very close to a full helm.

I'm in the process of painting a WOTR army for no other reason than they are colourful and look good in units, that said I have no knowledge of the period.

Could someone please tell me what modifications would be needed to convert these Teutonic Knights to pass as WOTR figures?

Hi John,

These are aimed at the early to mid 13th century rather than late fifteenth century - so they are about 200 years out in terms of armour, weapons etc. and the difference is as great as using WW1 figures to represent present day Western troops in Aghanistan.

The Perrys have some plastic WotR knights in the Rhendra queue, probably due out close to Salute in April. it's worth holding out for them I'd say.

Now if you were after the Second Barons' War - Simon de Montfort and Edward Longshanks, then they would be ideal.

Those look great!

Love the horns, pose/helm variety, and barding.

I hope they do some foot figures soon, as well as some opponents to go up against them.

All we need now is "...more cowbell...!", due to all those horns.
