Light Armor Mobile Infantry
« on: 03 December 2011, 04:36:50 AM »
I finally got around to painting some Starship Troopers light armor troopers. I'll use them for games of Firefly, so I only need eight to ten for the moment. When I decide to run the battle of Serenity Valley I'll need a few more.

The buildings in the background are from the HALO DVD boardgame, modified with some plastic card and paint.

This feels a bit Sheldon Cooperish, but in the Battle for Serenity Valley, the Alliance troopers looked like WW2 Germans. The SST uniforms weren't put to use until later in the series. In the BfSV, The Browncoats looked like WW2 Americans in Greatcoats. WW2 figs would make for great Firefly/Serenity fodder.

Not bad at all, just remember to paint the bases, raw sand does nothing to dispell the 'scale' issue. If you paint your textured bases they blend better with the 28mm illusion.

I got a couple nicer photos of my LAMIs taken today.

Not really worried about the bases for these guys. I spend much more time on the basing for characters. Besides, I haven't been happy with past gravel painting experiences.

Those are rather nice minis. :)

And regarding the bases, just add a devlan mud wash over the sand. Simple as that, and it will do the trick.

Examining screen grabs of the episode, I find that the alliance soldiers are wearing German coal scuttle helmets, but they are also wearing what looks like the Star Ship Troopers vest.

In the Train Job and some of the other episodes they wore the SST style helmets.  Whenever they did flashbacks to the Unification war the Alliance troops were shown wearing the coal skuttle style helmets.

Those look great.

IIRC, Joss Whedon said in a commentary that they found all of the old Starship Troopers gear and recycled it after the pilot was shot.

SST LAMI, the ones that got away  :'(

Nice job on those.  I never saw the figures in the flesh, but they look very nice.

Im being even dorkier than usual here but I think that the props people that made SST had the uniforms on hand for rental for a while.  The uniforms were used a number of times in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy (1999).  They feature briefly in the credits fifteen seconds in...

.

Not that it matters, but its an interesting bit of sci-fi wardrobe trivia if you like that sort of thing.

Those Mobile Infantry uniforms did the rounds :)

I wish that I had picked up a set of the MI figures.  Sigh.

Happens a lot.  I've been reading the hugely entertaining "Say; Hello, Spaceman" blog, which tracks the reuse of spacesuits (my favourite: the Moon Zero Two suits showing up on Here Come the DoubleDeckers).  Even Stanley Kubrick couldn't stop 2001 props being recycled against his express wishes:

Back from the dead, almost.
