The Way the World is...

Come on, sit down youth, it seems your finally ready to venture off on your first scavenging sortie, eh?
Well, let me tell you about the world out there, that snow covered wasteland we call home, you'll need to keep your wits about you to survive, you'll need to get in with a good crew who will wacth your back to ensure you survive.

Whats that?

You want to know how the world ended up in such a mess?

Well let me get you a drink youngster, and pull a stool up to the bar, its a long story.

About 30 years ago the world was completely different, of course i was just a child, of course, barely past 12 year old, but i digress.

The world was different, the Old Countries you will have heard mentioned by the elders in the settlement were around. Their governments running the world, hah, could you imagine being told what to do to live by some people in asettlement you have only heard of?

Anyway, over in the far east, there was a country called Korea, this place had been split into North and South sections somehow, and everyone was [tinkle]ed off at the North half of the country.

Remember the great Atlantic that someone mentioned trading ships sailing on?

Well on the other side of that ocean, there is a land that was once called the United States, nowadays we know it as just America, but back then things were different.

These United States really didn't like the North Koreans, and when the Korean leader died, something like 2011 i think, the States, along with South Korea started a major military test off the coast of South Korea.
To say that the newly elected leader of the North reacted badly is an understatment, as this really is the flashpoint which turned our world into the snow covered hell it is now.

Things began slowly, with soldiers being deployed against the North's armies, and the governments of the world condemming either the Koreans for launching an invasion of the south of their country, or some like Russia and China, which was very, very different back then, condemming the States involvement.

Finally things had to snap, and as the North Korea forces were pushed back, their leadership launched their nuclear stockpile at the US.
This really was the start of the end of the world.

Remember, how one of lifes most basic lessons is to never let someone get one up on you? always hit them back if they hit you?
Well that was true back then, and the States launched their missiles back, however, in a miscalculation, the fallout from the missiles went over the borders into far Eastern Russia and northern China.

Things calmed down then, until China activated its missiles against the states, and the whole war over the Pacific began in earnest, the fallout from the bombs gradually being carried around the world by the wind currents, dragging other countries into the battle.
Eventually the bombs stopped, and the survivors dragged themselves out of the ruins, only to find a worl of destruction and a new, far more deadlier horror.

It seemed that a biologolical weapon had been unleashed, either fired into china, or unleased accidentally, this supervirus is what we guard for on the town gates, its the reason why everyone coming into or out of town has to be checked for the beginning black flakes on their skin.
Its the reason people who are infected are shot if they wont leave town!

You want a refill?
Let me get that for you!

Where was i, oh yes, this supervirus spread through Old China, taking millions of the survivors with it, their skin flking off in black chunks and other more nasty things happening...

Well, Old China was quaranteened and its borders shut tight, but even with this security, infected refugees passed through by accident or design, we will never know.
When the virus hit the old European Alliance, whatever it was called, the governments over here came up with the plan to nuke the source of the virus and hopefully kill it.

Understandable really as the virus was savaging most of europe at the time, killing god knows how many people.

Russia and China with some missile left view this as a really hostile act, and launched their stuff back at europe.
Now the European cities had been spared the full horror of the war up to this point, but this second round of the war brought the bombs to their doorsteps, this is how i ended up with my busted hand. Had to drag myself out of the rubble of one of the cities back in what was once the United Kingdom.

Yet again, the bombs stopped faling to let the dust settle, this time with most of the world having been touched in some way or another by one of these events.
The survivors slowly began to rebuild their shattered civilisations, however the old countries were gone.
There was no more United Kingdom, or United States, or Sweden anymore, instead people just got on with trying to survive.

Those were the hardest times of course, trying to rebuild when your on your own, never knowing if another attack would come, raiders and bandits coming to raid the fledgling settlements.

And trying to scavenge air filtration systems and such to keep yourself alive so you don't have to wear a gasmask constantly was the hardest. Everyone wanted them, and lots of good people died for them.

However, whilst many people forgot about the countries borders, soem did not. Blood, Blood can remember things long after they happen.

Who knows how many people died, firstly in the war, then claimed by the virus, and in the years sicne the end of the war and the winter began, but Blood remembers.

Take the Russian's over there at that table for example, see how they scowl whenever they look over to the table next to them, thats cause at that table are sitting people with states blood flowing in their viens.

Oh, you'll learn the differences soon enough, they look a man has can tell you where his ancestors are from, and what blood he has.
The Russians still blame the states for the End of the World, and i can't say i blame them, but that is in the past, concentrate on the present.

Speaking of which, have you sgned onto a crew heading to the Baltic wasteland?
That used to be a vast inland sea you know, covered in water. Some of the best find are to be found out there still, as the sludge left in the bottom of the basin slowly freezes up and people can venture further into the center of the wasteland.
Oh, keep an eye out for any pre-war maps, those, like air-fans and such are worth a fortune.

If you head to Tallinn, you will be able to find a good crew to sign up with if you like the sound of the wasteland.
Oh, whilst your there stop by the Seaview Bar and tell Madeline that I will be having a trek over there after the high summer.

So, looks like your transport is about ready mate, go out there and prove yourself.
The hard men, those with the will to do whatever it takes will survive out there, the ones who don't, well they die.
Keep an eye out for people who are infected, always wear your gasmask and good luck.

Oh, one last piece of advice...stay away from the russians, they are bad news.

I rather loved the VSS Vintorez in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (called Vintar BC for some obscure reason)
