American city styles didn't change *that* much from the 1920s to the 1940s.  I've built city sections using Matakishi's tutorials for my 2nd American Civil War game, and they look great.  If your zombie game is set in the 80s, it might be a problem, but if it's set in the 50s, that's another story.

His tutorials are pretty darned easy to follow. which is always a bonus!  :)

My Zombie board is based in the modern day but most of my buildings are based off Matakishi's buildings (your great by the way) so it should be fine

Most big cities reflect their boom times, which is why a lot of US/Canadian cities still are filled with buildings from the 1890-1900s, especially downtown.

And as pointed out, the 1930s and 1940s, the amount of construction was much smaller than previous decades.

I found one thing that helps, and that's really simple is adding period specific posters and advertisements on the open spaces of your buildings.  You could weather them and even tape them on until your game is finished.  I totally stole the idea from some of the artists on this site.

Here is my take
