Can anyone help with the English term of such leather leggings from ca 1920.
The Polish word is stylpy or sztylpy, and is used like this in the sentence "para butów lub kamasze i stylpy".

I am pretty sure, the standard term is "gaiters".

I doubt it a little, without knowing it.
Gaiters are normally something made from some softer material, here it is hard, boot-like leather shafts?

Gaiters is the correct term, sometimes referred to as "chaps" but to me they are what cowboys wear and are totally different

Do you mean the shown stylpy are not contemporary Polish from the period?
The were offered on the Polish auction site Allegro and dated having been used in 1920.

The tall, equestrian sort of leather gaiter used to turn your ankle boots into riding boots are sometimes called half-chaps (as opposed to the full chaps worn by cowboys that go all the way to the waist).
But both 'leggings' and 'gaiters' are also correct for this sort of thing.

I would think that only officers would wear these

Thank you to all for the very kind help.
I will use the word leather gaiters, as suggested.

Gaiters would be correct or puttees. Puttee entered the English language through Hindi.

Not really. Puttee comes from the Hindi for 'bandage' and only applies to leggings that come in long strips and wrap around your leg after the fashion of a bandage. Gaiters and puttees perform the same function but they are distinctly different things.

I would go with leggings [leggins]. I wear a pair of canvas ones for re-enacting the Spanish American War of 1898. And they are a real pain in the leg!
