Wilson Creek Staff Ride
« on: 09 September 2012, 02:20:42 PM »
As part of my job I had the opportunity to attend the Wilson Creek Staff Ride (ACW fans rejoice) and it truly was tax dollars well spent for the group.

Before the WCSR event I had read about the battle and wondered if the term "Gettysburg of the West" was a bit hyperbole.  Nope, really was one of the critical battles of the ACW - with Glorieta Pass and Pea Ridge it pretty much locked up Missouri and points West (Colorado mines) for the Union.

And nothing I read in a book or saw on a map was as instructive as moving from Sigel's 2nd to 3rd position after following the path of the 3rd Louisianna when it approached and assaulted Sigel's forces.  Security, cover, concealment - had it all.

Intel/military lesson after lesson during the three days made it one of the best TDY trips (and most worthwhile) ever in my career.

If you get the chance to walk the grounds of the National Battlefield do so!  Only thing you can't see is the position of the Pulaski Battery (endangered plants risk.)

Gracias,

Glenn
