Oh, and let's not forget one event of the game we played:

After Grimm's tribal hero killed my last scout (see picture above) I had my revenge by drawing the encounter poisoneous snake and playing it on said hero. At least he won't be bragging about his kill! Muhahahaha!

Now it would be unfair to blame the rules for my disastreous performance. Thinking back I think it might just have to do with the fact that I didn't even manage to pass a single morale check after losing close combat.

Right. It is tneds to be all too tempting to make generalization from one outcome of a particular set of use. I played one and the same scenario several times at Historicon a few years back (which is a rare occurance for me) certainly told me that importance of the favours of Lady Luck.

The more I see of this game the more I know i'm glad i've got it.
