Attempted Murder by Train (a Pulp Alley AAR)
« on: April 15, 2013, 06:22:20 AM »
A pair of good Pulp Alley games this afternoon; the first was a fairly straightforward clash between Stalhmaske the Teutonic Schemer and the revived, skulking Thuggee cultists. The cultists won, just, and it was actually a fairly low-lethality game with one epic five-way brawl.

The second game was a pulp classic, a gonzo three-way game with Stalhmaske reappearing (run by me), the White Russian exile group lead by the mad General Count Drunkski, and Sir Charles, a wealthy English minor aristocrat who denies working for British Intelligence.

Sir Charles had to get some recently-found papers to safety, which meant running the gauntlet of both the German and Russian groups. Thankfully they both started fighting each other as well as the British, and Sir Charles and most of his crew escaped, with only the loss of poor Churchill the bulldog, skewered by the terrifying White Russian swordswoman Princess Natasha.

The high point of the game (although it was technically a sideshow, having nothing to do with Sir Charles' papers) was the attempt by the White Russian leader General Count Drunkski to run over Stalhmaske the Teutonic Schemer with a steam locomotive! Stahlmaske dodged the beast and climbed onboard, attempting to make his way back to the cab to evict the Count, and firing his rifle one-handed at various other Russians all the while.

Sir Charles slipped out of the area with most of his group trailing after him, while Stahlmaske was thrown from the train and fled, leaving five of his seven-strong group behind, dead or captured. This is fairly standard operating procedure for the ruthless German - the trail of bodies he leaves behind is frequently composed mostly of his own underlings!

This was also the first time we'd used the "official" playing cards from Pulp Alley. The Fortune cards are full-sized coated playing card stock, strong and easy to shuffle. Well worth it.

This.

Sounds like a lot of fun. A complete AAR will be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes.
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

Oh, I love battle on the train. That looks awesome! Where did you get your train?  :-*

We're so glad the cards are working out nicely for you.

THANKS!

Nice pic. What is the company that makes the train and the track ? I'd imagine it's a box set with the train and a circle of track ? Can't find one that's scale here in Australia to save myself  :?

Sorry, I was the only one taking photos and the one I posted was really the only one of four or five that turned out.

The train is a "New Bright Industry Co" toy, somewhere between S and O scale in size. My brother found the locomotive, tender, three cars and the track for $5 at a local thrift store and has repainted the engine and modified it a bit, chopping off the very American-style diamond smokestack and big pointy cowcatcher at the front as well as repainting it. The huge light on the front should probably be swapped for something smaller, but it'll do for now! We haven't done anything with the various cars yet, except the one gondola car - I used the chassis of it for my RCW armoured train car.

New Bright still makes trains, although not currently anything like the freight set we have now - the locomotive is the same as the bottom set here - http://www.newbright.com/category/view/id/9 - but ours was much plainer, without all the Xmas kitsch.

The pennies we use for bases are thin enough to just slip between the catwalk alongside the boiler and the piping above it at a few places along the boiler, hench Stahlmaske being able to balance where he is!

It depends where you are. I've found a great source of trains in a little $2 shop in Lalor (Melbourne). $19 for an engine, coal car, a couple of freight cars and track. All they need is a half decent paint job and you're laughing. I don't know what the actual scale is but they fit okay with 28mm.
Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

Apparently I am. I'd apologize, but let's face it, he's a wargamer. If he hadn't been obsessing over a train, he'd have been obsessing over something else that made no sense to normal people!

 :)
