My Irish War of Independence Project
« on: 18 February 2013, 05:57:05 PM »
I though I'd share the first minis of my IWI project here. I'm trying to get back painting after a bit of a break. Now, having gone to the trouble of organising a game room I need to get motivated. Hopefully posting here will give me the push I need.

These first 3 photos are Musketeer British from their Inter War range

These last 2 are from Reiver. Not as nice as the Musketeer ones IMHO but I still like them and they were easy to paint.

Next up will be some IRA lads (I hope  :) )

One last thing while this is starting off as a pure IWI project I just received Strange Aeons in the post. I have a feeling these chaps could end up facing something worse than the IRA in the future.

Great stuff, John!
 :-*

I love the Musketeer range for this period and wish that I had discovered them earlier.

On the Strange Aeons front: These fellas will be perfect for that.

And: Welcome to the Cult.
You will like it.
Oh, yes! You will!

Nice paint job.  Strange Aeons is a horror game, right?
I am not a quack!  I'm a mad scientist.  There IS a difference!

Eldritch Horror, so Cthulhu-esque.
Set in the Interwar period, hence Just John thinking of using these fellas.

Ahhhhhh, now I see how these guys would be useful.  Perhaps something summoned from the depths of a bog will help the Irish?  :)

That is a bloody good idea.
Consider it stolen!

Thanks for the nice words lads.

I love the Musketeer figure - Paul Hicks must be one of my favourite sculptors at the moment. I also have some of his Mutton Chops figures to use as IRA, armed gentry etc. They would be perfect for SA as well.

Speaking of SA - here I am, I start a nice innocent historical Inter War thread and now I've been inducted into a cult  lol

Our heritage is filled with ghosts (taibhse) and superstitions (piseog) We have Irish versions of the Jack O'Lantern (Stingy Jack with a turnip, not a pumpkin, Halloween (Samhain) and probably most famously the Banshee (an bean shidhe which means the fairy woman). And lets not forget Crom Cruach reputedly propitiated with human sacrifice. Then of course there are the Bog Bodies, amazingly well preserved bodies a couple of thousand years old one of whom may have been a sacrifice to Crom.

But back to the War of Independence..... ;)

Oops, sorry for the digression.  :(

You haven't said which rules you'd be using for the IWI.  Did the English use armored cars like the Rolls Royce in Ireland?  Hmmmm.  I have to look into this a little deeper as I was considering gaming the Irish Rebellion of 1798. This later fight may be an interesting game that won't require too many figures and I already have some Great War British painted.

I don't mind at all DrPete, I was the one who brought it up and it is an insidious cult anyway  :)

Rules are the next thing to decide on. We had a game recently using Bolt Action - it was fun and quick, but a bit too lethal. By this I mean too many casualties were taken before morale took effect. We're going to try out either Mud & Blood (Too Fat Lardies) or Triumph and Tragedy next.

Armoured cars were used on occasion. In fact I live a couple hundred metres from an ambush site where armoured cars appeared on the scene forcing the IRA to complete a fighting withdrawal. All you would need is a few Crossley Tenders and one or two Armoured Cars for the Crown forces with a mix of regular soldiers, RIC (armed police) or Auxiliaries. On the IRA side of things about 30 - 40 figures would do for the larger engagements.

I've often thought about 1798 - but thought it might be a bit too depressing to wargame.
