Sacking cloth would probably work, but you'd have to be careful that it doesn't soak through on to whatever you painting on and hessian tends to shrink a little when it gets wet, not sure how it'd react to acrylic. It may be best to stick to artifical fibres so they don't shrink.

Would it be possible to get a water effect with this metod? I don't have any experience with resin but seeing this excellent tutorial got me thinking about a lightweight water board with realistic water effect that doesn't weigh a ton.

Hm...more experienced folks might be able to correct me, but the limited experience I have with resin and water effects would suggest they're not going to survive being rolled up.

That looks fabulous! As I may be about to move somewhere with a bit (but not a lot) more gaming room, this might work for me too!

So I went forth with the sacking cloth:

Left it to dry... eager to see what happens next!

Put a sheet of plastic (table cloth protection thing that the wife threw out) underneath to handle the bleeding through the sacking cloth.

Tobi, this is really excellent, great for all the gamers who are challenged by lack of space and it looks as good as a sculptured board. Spot on tutorial and thanks to everyone else who as contributed ideas, I am off to the DIY shop tomorrow.
Thanks

Sounds good Thorbjørn, let us know how it works and how much it shrinks. It is natural fibre sack cloth isn't it?

I've done a similar mat and used clear acrylic caulk over paint for a water effect- ripples can be done with a brush handle and you can embed small gravel to indicate a ford.
