Need help identifying this feldmutze
« on: 22 July 2013, 05:02:14 PM »
Hello all,

I’ve "found" this in the collection at the museum where I work. I know that this is a WWI style German fieldcap. What I would like to know is if someone can pinpoint the location where the wearer was likely to be from? IIRC, you can tell which part of Germany it’s from by the colors used on the frontal cockade. Is that right? All inside markings have faded away except, maybe, what look like the name of the owner which is (barely) visible.

Cheers!

Quick look at Brassey's history of uniforms WW1 German Army shows the black/white/red as the 'universal' Reichs cockade and the black/white/black as the Prussian.  Of course, is was the big post 1866/70 Prussia with many of the 'losers' directly incorporated

Top one is the Imperial Cockade, they all had that one whatever state they were from (as did imperial units such as colonial forces, who would not have had a state cockade). If that bottom one is black-white-black (it's kinda worn and hard to tell) then it is Prussian.

Thanks for the info and links. I will take a closer look at the feldmutze as I realise that the pictures I’ve taken are not that good.

...and that’s definitely a black, white, black cockade so a Prussian cockade.

Thanks again for your help!

Hi, So far it is bog-standard Prussian feldmutze - any chance of a photo of the BA (BEKLEIDUNGSAMPT - or clothing depot) ink stamp which would give further information as to what part of the Reich it came from...?

As I said in my first post, the interior markings have all faded away... Now I wonder how it got here. I know there's a very small number of "local" people that served overseas. An other option is that it could be from a POW as there were some German POW who worked in the forests around here. Some of them even choosed to stay here after the war.
