Red or White?
« on: 08 May 2008, 10:55:25 PM »
I have a Ford Tc, a FT-17 and I'm on the prowl for a Male and Female tank. Given these vehicles, which side would I most likely be on?
(just curious as I have virtually zilch knowledge about this period in history but have the vehicles on hand and would love to paint them instead of selling them)

Any help is kindly appreciated (oh, and as always, these items are all 1/72)

Both. lol I own both of the Ospreys on the topic, and each book features at least one of each of the above (except for the Tc, which would most likely end up in Red hands if they managed to take some with them after the Vistula debacle - for most of the Russian Armoured Cars, it went the other way...).

If you do a "historical" RCW approach, then of course this sounds more White than Red. For BoB in the pulpey sense and for the later years, both sides sound okay.

How Chris said they could be user for both sides. I have decided to use my FT-17 for the Whites and Mark V Male for the Reds because I've seen in the "Armoured things" :) Osprey a nice pic of some Red Guards leaning on a Male tank.

Ford Tc has been used on both sides too.

I recommend the mentioned Ospreys. Better than most.
If you want to play historical, the question would be which theatre you want to play? IIRC the red FT17s where used in the Amur region, I can't say if they had any in the west before the failed 2nd white crimea breakout. Mk IVs have been in use in the baltic/Leningrad area early in the civil war, but during the fighting in southern ucrainia/crimea they are placed best.
If you come for the king, you better not miss (Omar)

As I know zilch about the period it seems some studying is in order. My goal is more pulpy then historical though, so don't worry about me.

Well the only people with Ford Tc armoured cars were the Poles (they built them). They also used FT-17s. A small, quantity of FT-17s were used by Denikin's forces in South Russia. Elsewhere there were some ex US ones captured and used by Bolshevik partisans in Siberia.

All  of the Mark V tanks ( except possibly one) were hermaphrodite, ie one male, one female sponson, which suggests that if you can find a MkV in 1/72 you will need two kits.

Judging from the angle of the front bonnet plate, the spoked wheel and the distinctive large hatch just visible above the head of the comrade on the right, I suspect it to be a Pierce-Arrow:

There was quite some variation to the design, but that twin-hinged front hatch and spoked wheels were common to all.

What´s the problem with that? I´ve got FOUR books to look up armoured cars (five if you count the rather basic 1970s Bovington guide, six with the terribly-translated Gondrom AFV)...

I´d just admonish the Prof for owning just ONE book on the subject. I cannot understand how one can live with less than a handful of books on armoured cars. Everyone should have one.
