The Mantic mystery box
« on: 03 January 2014, 12:23:50 PM »
OK, it's a marketing ploy, but this WAS fun!   :D
I bought one, as I love getting a boxful of models which I have not chosen myself. My impression is that considering the contents, it's a bargain - but that's almost besides the point. I've not had so much fun opening a box of models in years.
What I got:
a leaflet promoting Kings of War Elves
a copy of the mantic journal
10 human spearmen from Kings of War
10 elves and a very large pussy cat, Kings of War again - including bows or swords, and a commander with 2 head options
A very nice if unusual dryad, mounted on a plinth
3 orcs or Kings of War
2 Marauders (orx) for Warpath
A Marauder attack trike for Warpath
A Marauder and a goblinoid beastie for Warpath
5 Forge Fathers (Squats by another name) for Warpath
One as yet unidentified model which could be a Veermin
One largish heavily armoured Dreadball model - a running mech sort of thing
One obese female Dreadball player

My ecletic collection ensures that all these are useful, which of course helps  :D

I ordered one as well, but it hasn't arrived yet... did they come with bases this time?

Same here. Haven't painted anything or indeed removed anything from the box or sprues but I still smile when I delve into it  :D

I'm totting up some prices from the Mantic site - the Dreadball Big Mech is 9.99; the Marauder trike is 9.37. The Magic Box is 19.99, and mine included these two together with all the other models listed. Not bad at all.  :)

Mantic are really good when it comes to goodies, the goody bags at their open day all had a marauder trike or forge fathers cannon, not bad when you consider that the tickets were only £7. :)
never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

The dryad is probably a Loka figure. Is it colored plastic?

I just got my box. Got some of the new human spearmen, a bag of new ogres, a green Loka figure, probably some Dreadball stuff, some resin forgefathers, a couple plastic marauders...

Compared to last year it seems to be less figures but generally more new figures even though a couple of old favorites were in the mix.

I find the non-inclusion of bases a bit funny since Mantic has their own basing scheme... not that I really mind because I will base them on washers anyway.

Yes it is, I identified it from their site. And the veermin are not veermin but some alien rebels.

I am suprised you didn't get any ogres, most people did. Still a decent haul though.

Wouldn't have minded that, but I prefer the Mech I think.
Argonor, sorry, I'm keeping it - would have shipped it if you needed it otherwise.

Oh, it wasn't a plead for that - just saying that if I'd bought a box, I would have enjoyed getting another mech  :)

I know mate, but I'd have sent it if I didn't have a sort of plan (which has very little to do with Dreadball). It's almost finished too, very nice model.

Yes, it looks rather good - just ashame it's made of that crappy material. I have one of mine on my prepping station right now, pending treatment as soon as I have my male human team ready for priming (I base them on washers and use filler to make smooth bases to be painted flat black and probably varnished (I even consider completely varnishing these minis, contrary to my usual maxim, as they are going to be handled a lot, and not only by ppl normally accustomed to handling painted wargames minis...)
