Is there a british 1938 map anywhere?
« on: May 01, 2014, 03:49:18 PM »
Hello,

for my games, I am looking for a british map, for the 1930s. Something to download, black & white. Different areas, not a General Map. Thanks a lot for your help.

 Yours, Sebastian

So regional maps of the British Isles in the 1930s?

Check the David Rumsey Map Collection website, which has a huge collection and a bunch of ways to search, both by area and by date of publication. My favourite way to browse this collection is the Mapsearch way, which is easy to sort by both date of publication and area, and shows coverage of each of the maps: http://rumsey.mapranksearch.com/

Here's London in 1922, for example.

Old Maps Online is similar and will access a lot of the same maps, plus resources the Rumsey collection doesn't encompass.

The Hipkiss Old Maps website also has a bunch of UK stuff - London Gazetteer from the 1920s, for example.

The reason 1920s stuff is easier to get than 1930s or later has to do with copyright, mostly - pre-1923 stuff no longer has any active copyright, so it's in the public domain and anyone can copy/host/download/whatever!

It's worth looking at old travel books too - I have a 1920s Bradshaw (reprint) that I used as a handy reference fot Call of Cthulhu games. Apart from rail (and shipping) timetables, early Bradshaws tend to list all sorts of useful stuff such as details of local hotels etc. Quite entertaining seeing just hotels advertise things like "electric lighting in all rooms".
