Thanks Willie, very much appreciated  . Now that I've sourced more I can experiment with the piece that I have   .

Are there any more words of wisdom? For example, can I 'dye' the fabric with acrylic paints? If so what sort of paint/water ratio did you go for?

Would I get away with using hair clippers (and would it ruin them)?

Darrel, we found out that acrylic paint is indeed the best. We bought some big tubes of rather cheap paint at an art store and diluted it at least 60-70% before spraying. Afterwards we simply combed the grass with a fine toothed comb from the pet shop again.
Hair clippers for humans are a lot finer and I think less sturdy than the ones for pets. Not really sure if it would stand the rough treatment. We had to clean ours every 10 minutes or so with a stiff brush that came with the trimmer.. The dry, unpainted fur is easy enough but once painted it clogs up the teeth fairly rapidly.
The roads are easy- learned from the guys from Stronghold- Shave off all the fur and then burn/melt the synthetic fabric underneath. We used a small kitchen torch for that. You know the ones chefs use for Creme Brulee and such.

Allow me to answer for Willie.
After all, I'm the one who bought the clippers for TSA.
I think the one you linked to will do the job.
And yes, I guess the larger gap between teeth is important, a clipper for human use is much finer.
You'll need some practice ,and after a few minutes you'll get the hang of it.

I used my Infinity airbrush, but any other will do as well.
Just thin down the paint enough and you're on your way.
In my opinion, you can even use spraycans...just use some variation of colors and be carefull for exposed foam. (it will melt)
The details can be done with the AB then.
