What is considered an Action in Pulp Alley?
« on: 13 August 2014, 09:37:56 PM »
Dave, Mila etal,

I am realizing that I'm confused by what exactly is considered an action. The rules say that a figure can normally walk and perform One Action. The rules also say that a figure cannot run and perform an Action in the same turn. That is pretty clear. Where I am confused, is when I see that a figure CAN run and still shoot or brawl. Aren't these considered actions?

You can walk or run as part of a Rush in to a brawl. Any movement type may be used to rush an enemy; to move one character into base-to-base contact with another. Otherwise you have to keep moving characters 1" apart...
There is no penalty to your Fighting skill if you run into a brawl, think of it as a sort of 'charge bonus'.

A character can not run and then shoot, with a -1d penalty for having run. But If shot at, that character could REACT as a defender, by firing back at a -1d penalty for having run during its activation. Multiple -1d penalties would apply if you ran, shot and then fought as a reaction.

*Edit* I got the bit about running & shooting wrong. I've corrected it just in case it pops up as a search result...

Television is rather a frightening business. But I get all the relaxation I want from my collection of model soldiers. P. Cushing

An action generally relates to a non-combat activity that is important to the scenario. Here are some examples --

1. Attempting a Plot Point is the most common action in Pulp Alley.

2. Any ability that includes something like "as an action for this character...", is an action.

3. Maneuvering a vehicle is an action.

In Pulp Alley, if it counts as an "action" then it is clearly indicated as being an action in the rules. Otherwise, it is not an action.

Moving is not an action, it's moving. Fighting is not an action, it's fighting.

I hope that helps.

HAVE FUN

Not?
I always thought you could run and shoot, but at -1d (for the rest of the turn, so also for reactions). Just checked the rules, but couldn't find you can't shoot.

Yup, that is correct. A character may run and shoot in the same activation - with a -1d penalty.  ;)

ACK!

I humbly stand corrected. We have been interpreting shooting as an action and so playing it wrong...

However, this means there is now more fun to be had.
