Yes, I am seriously considering Irregular's Faux Trek miniatures. As you say, I am separated from Bergstrom by the Atlantic, currency exchange and nuisance customs men.

At least the currency exchange part is on your side. We don't have customs fees much in the US, but anything from the UK costs twice as much as it "should" due to the dollar/pound rate. Makes me envy the euro sometimes.

In fact I sometimes wonder if the exchange rate (for brits) ever cancels out the customs fees, making a cheap US item equivelent to average priced UK item.

History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

You know I have always held of on buying Twilight Imperium on account of its price, even if its a nice game and a rather impressive box to have on the shelve.

Now your telling me its actually worth it for the miniatures alone? Blast it that might chance things...

Also if your ever looking for somebody to give your rules a look over shoot me a PM! I love picking apart new or different rules sets.

Also, if you ever have a group of people you want to alienate and never speak to again, twilight imperium is the perfect way of making them leave you alone.
never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

For a lot of things it averages out to about the same cost in pounds as in dollars - maybe a couple of quid cheaper, but rarely much more than that. With miniatures it's anyone's bet - it just depends who checks the parcel!

That seems odd... and slightly sketchy. You'd think it'd be based on something objective (and therefore predictable), like weight or declared value.

True. But for other things, it's based on prices in shops, and the grousing of my friends who have to import them. For miniatures, it's based off my friends' & I's ability to avoid customs attention as private parceleers!  ;)

Apples and oranges, maybe.

I have seen some nice small scale ship designs on shapeways.com.  You might look there for some comparisons.  Not sure how they would be price wise.
The winning player isn't always the better player.
