You can always stick a smaller base on a larger one if need be, but going in the other direction is a tad more difficult.

I used to have shorter cav bases, but I switched to 50mm because their tails were always getting damaged by bumping into the horses in the next rank.

Also, today's skirmish cavalry might tomorrow be a ranked-up unit in a larger scope ruleset.  I've got a number of cavalry that do double duty so that's another check toward rectangles.

Still, I see where round bases will look nice alongside round-based infantry and if you're sure they will never be ranked up a round base could be acceptable.

Sabot bases/trays would solve that problem  :)

cheers

If the cobble inserts are separate from the actual base, I think your old plan of trimming down the cavalry base might be workable, albeit labour intensive.

Oh! Another idea would be find a way to cut a 30mm lipped base in half and somehow fit extensions on it. That would also be labour-intensive though.

For me round bases on irregular cavalry types, such as your highwayman or in my case Plains Indians.

For the regular cavalry I use 50x25mm rectangular bases. That way they can be formed in a column or line and look regimented.

For figures not meant to ride in formation I think the round base works best.

I second this option. I'd find some unified models annoying to regiment together though haha...

That is definately something to consider. Those highwaymen will definately never form a regiment so that is a safe decision there.
