IHMN at CouncilFires in Cambridge Ontario
« on: 05 October 2014, 04:09:13 PM »
Had a great time at Council Fires in Cambridge Ontario yesterday. I headed down with my most excellent friend Sterling Moose. The gaming list online was light on VSF so as a last minute thought I brought along my Flashman square set up and we played several games of IHMN.

First up we had a five man " catch the Penguin" game. It was based on the capture the pigeon scenario, except the target was a pith Helmet wearing penguin who was carrying information that could change the course of history We simplified the rules a tad for our enthusiastic younger players and squads of German Jaegers, Dutch Colonial infantry, Canadian Mounties and Mercenaries chased the penguin all over the board while a befuddled constabulary waded in and bashed some heads in trying to restore order. After each failed attempt to catch the penguin he would slip away another random d10 inches. It was chaos, it was fun, and most importantly the kids loved it. So did the grown ups.

Our second game was back to the full rules. It was a standard get to the other side of the board mission. For simplicities sake we all took variants of the riffle company. Each squad came from my large Dutch VSF army, so it was really more of a training exercise I suppose. It was a hard fought game as I advanced my Black Dutchmen along side Barry's naval contingent against LAF's own Johnno's Jaegers and His father Ken's South Mollucan Colonial troops. Hand to hand combat was brutal near the Masonic temple but Flashman was smiling on the naval contingent and one lucky sailor jumped off the table moments before one of the Black Dutchmen joined him. It was a fun game and Johnno and I agreed to a rematch next spring at Hotlead, each with our own fully realized squad. There was quite a bit of interest generated in the game from onlookers and I think that we might see a few more people playing it soon.

You've done a magnificent job with the terrain Dave, I'm looking forward to seeing it in person.

The terrain was quite impressive. The figures were wonderfully painted from Chairface's collection. It was a great game. Nice and quick and dirty. I have some pics I'll try to upload later.
Yearly painting challenges only show me how useless I am at painting...

Nice to a detailed report of affairs over in the Dominion  :D And good to see youngsters enjoying the game also.

I'll ask before others do, are there lists for some of the more unusual companies?

Not this time Craig. It was pretty basic lists based on the a Rifle Company list. It was last minute thing. More preparation will go into the next time

I do love it when the kids get involved, they bring a completely different view to it all. If a game can be played and enjoyed by ten year olds and seventy year olds then it works.

The cobblestone streets look suspiciously like the Lemax Christmas village accessories. I picked up a bunch after Christmas--18"x36"--but mine are darkish brown cobblestones with black backgrounds, actually darker brown than the photo below.

Those in your photos look nicely stone-grey. Did they come that way, or did you paint them? If so, I'd be interested in how you did it, as they look quite nice!

All in all, well done!
I was talking aloud to myself. A habit of the old: they choose the wisest person present to speak to; the long explanations needed by the young are wearying.

Good eye! I sprayed the board with Krylon grey primer and then did a quick dry brush with a lighter craft store grey. I bought a dollar store large makeup brush for the dry brush

Nice work and bravo on the kids-accessible game.  Gotta get em while they're young.
