Any ideas what this equipment does?
« on: 29 December 2014, 12:35:52 PM »
I recently bought this as part of a job lot of 54mm soldiers and kit.Confirming its purpose has proved elusive so far. I suspect the casting is from the 20-30's but portrays equipment from an earlier era. Both sets of wheels are articulated, the sections are intended to divide, and holes on top indicate there was something fixed over it all. The central shaft is snapped off and almost certainly reached the hole in the rear section. I have an idea but would welcome suggestions and supporting evidence from any members. The polar bear is just a seasonal touch!

I have an idea it is meant to support signalling equipment in a flat terrain. with the rear section having the wheels removed and then sited vertically to provide support to a pole....? I do not think it is a pontoon wagon base but I could be wrong.

Many thanks for any help!

19th Century rocket battery? That's just a guess.

It's used in Coke adverts, if you're referring to the one with a red scarf; also catches fish.

As for the wheeled contraption, dunno, but it reminds me of the old US Cavalry toy cannon and limber which I had many years ago.

I was thinking a Pontoon Wagon?

Tony
Pontoon wagons, the purpose built ones, had a box decking which contained bridging beams.  Other wagons carried the trackway and other components.  No doubt if timber wagons were available locally they would be pressed into service though most likely for beams and other long items rather than the pontoon itself.
