Basing Dragoons?
« on: January 09, 2015, 05:47:58 PM »
Discuss!

What works well, are there different ways to do it?

I have some dismounted archers and a horse holder, representing ordonnance archers if the italian wars but I guess the topic and representation is fairly universal whatever period.

Your thoughts are much appreciated

All the best

Stuart

Sometimes the ruleset will stipulate.

My 15mm Renaissance armies (TYW and Samurai) has them on a 40x40mm base with 1 horse handler and 2-3 infantry as FoG:R stipulates this.

My 28mm ECW army (Irish) has them on 25x50mm bases for when mounted and 20x20mm when on foot as Warhammer:ECW stipulates this.

If you're asking what looks good, I think it's the FoG solution of having them on one base (no swapping around needed during a game) which is deeper than normal so you can create a mini diorama.

Thanks, I should have elaborated, yep definitely what looks good but could still be gamed with so things like;

Same number of horses for dismounted figures?

I'm thinking 60x80 mm base but not sure whether to have the shooters on the length or width.

Also possible inclusion of a hedge or other terrain?

Horse holder dismounted or mounted?

Might seem anal but I like detail  ;D

The following is my opinion.

No - less horses, as they crowd the base.

This for your 28mm? I think shooters on the short edge (2 shooting), with a handler/horse and shooter loading behind them.

I find 28mm is too much, but a tree stump or two.

Dismounted.

It's only an opinion. Google image search - I tried "DBR Dragoons" and "FOG Dragoons" and got a few useful hits showing options.
