Lion Rampant question?
« on: April 17, 2015, 02:37:20 PM »
I have a growing collection of Dark Age Normans and Anglo-Saxons for SAGA which is a rules set I quite enjoy. However some of my game mates are not as fond of the rules and so I am looking for another skirmish based rules set. I have ready many of the AAR on here and want to know from those who have the rules. Will they work for that time period? Normans conquering the Saxons?

Should work just fine.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

I would say they would work mechanically, it would be a simple task to assign the hearthguard, warriors and levie troops on to a LR troop type. However, LR does not really have an equivalent of the different abilities of the Saga battle board, so you might find it less characterful than Saga. It's certainly easier to play, which might appeal to your group.

yup it would work...just remember LR uses units in 6's and 12's not multiples of 4 like Saga

- LR is a much better game for multiplayers - SAGA is more colourful but only really lends itself to 1 on 1

We use them for Dark Age battles, but change the Schiltron rule to Shieldwall which extra armour against missles as well as melee.  Otherwise they give a fun, smooth flowing game.  We played three games last night in 2 hours.  A great set of rules.

I've never played Saga, so I can't compare the two... but folk on the LR forum are already way ahead of you; http://duxrampant.yuku.com/topic/4/1066-Retinues#.VTFeRSGqqko

We have played a lot of Dark age Lions Rampant. Works just fine. We gave the Saxons an overweight of foot yeomen and sergents. To give them a more defensive nature. And the Vikings foot men at arms and fierce foot to make them more aggressive.

Dan Mersey, the rules author, actually has a Norman list in the rules and posted those extras on the Dux forum so he must think they work for dark age games.
I have not tried them for dark ages and can't think of a reason they would not work well.

There should be an article in the next Wargames Illustrated showing some ideas for a fuller Dark Ages adaptation, but I think you can play a fun game with the rules as written (maybe adjust the wording of a few Boasts…).

Thanks everyone, based on your all's feedback I now have a set of the rules in the mail on order. Might have another Lion Rampant convert.
