Odd question- 28mm scale bamboo?
« on: February 25, 2016, 03:06:23 AM »
Hey guys, I'm looking for some 28mm scale bamboo, if anybody has any idea where I might get some. Not scale plants, which are easy enough to find, but poles (that might be used for construction).

I'm thinking of building a Kingdoms of Men army for Kings of War using either Perry Choson Koreans or the forthcoming range of Ming troops by Clibinarum. I am going to use a GW Lizardmen Bastilodon as a kind of giant turtle for my army's 'Beast of War', upon which I would like to build a suitably north-East Asian-looking howdah. I'd like to build it from in-scale bamboo if possible. I have vague ideas about how it might look, but I'm open to suggestions as well.

Cheers!

I've seen kebab or cocktail sticks used as poles to good effect and pretty cheap materials to work with too. Mostly these have just painted 'growth nodes', but if you want a sculpted effect I think I once read about how you could add nodes by running a thin line of runny adhesive across a row of sticks at intervals.
You'd need to fix the poles at both ends into something like blocks of foam to make an open grille and then (protecting your tabletop of course) dribble a thin line of glue across them (like icing a cake). If the correct consistency the glue will run round the shaft without going stringy creating a bulge that can be painted when dry...
Might be worth experimenting with...

Thanks all, I think I'll give sukhe_bator's idea a go- it sounds nice and cheap.

I found an online guide that suggested making the bamboo out of cotton buds because the sticks are hollow. Hopefully I'll be able to show it off soon enough!

I found a lot and cheap plants, from an Ebay Store "ethersell88".
They got near anything from bamboo, to palms, trees, jungle palms, undergrowth, etc.....

Have a look here, they are not 1 finished, but you can judge the quality:
