23th Fusiliers information.

Hello,

I would like to make a unit in 40mm Front Rank miniatures with advancing/attacking poses. Front Rank doesn't have them. I was wondering if on campaign for the American Revolution i could instead use figures with tricorne and use the fusiliers models for the flag bearers and officers? Would it be possible historical?
Thanks for any opinions, suggestions and info?

Hi Dirk

The answer is yes as research points to the 23rd wearing hats rather than fur caps during their stay in America. The latter were extremely expensive items purchased by the regiment's colonel at his expense and he was not keen to see them damaged or lost. In addition to fur caps, the men were issued with hats for undress and off-duty wear and these were worn in the field instead of the precious fur caps. The hats also had the advantage of being more practical and more comfortable on campaign.

The three feathers on the hat are meant to reproduce the regimental crest. While in the field, officers, ensigns and musicians would also wear hats rather than fur caps.

The 23 rd fought all over the country and was one of the longest serving units in the British Army during the AWI.
It all depends on what part of the war that you wish to represent.
The Troiani painting above is fine for the earlier war in the North.
Once the Unit transferred to the South, the uniform changed entirely.
Cut down coats, overalls and round hats with one side turned up, was the basic uniform then.
The two look nothing alike.
