Anthony and I tried out the Colonial version of the portable wargames rules this afternoon and had a fun game:

54mm always seemed cool to me...I have a bunch of "Armies in Plastic" WWI stuff. I now need a good simple set of rules...

Have a look at Bob's portable wargames rules - Anthony is planning to use them for WW1 and I think they'd work well.

The link is down for me but I was able to find the Google cache of it.

And I've got to say, I'm impressed.

How do you find the narrow side forward rectangular bases compared to the unbased figures on the other side?  Way less prone to tipping?

A while back I got a whole batch of wargaming rules, letters and periodicals going back to the late 1950s from an estate sale and reading about Joe Morschauser's grid based games.  I went and downloaded Bob's rules.  They fit right in with the type of gentlemanly gaming approach I love to see and read about (and looking forward to play).  My 54mm colonials are AiP Sudan range and while I was originally going to do a skirmish, I think a 6+ unit battle game might be a better way to go.

I better get painting.

I googled "Bob portable wargame rules" and found this:

I think it's the right one.  About half way down the page.
