Zulu War Brit trousers- looking for a really dark blue
« on: August 27, 2016, 07:00:00 PM »
Didn't know if this is the right place for this....(if it is wrong mods please move) I am unhappy with the dark blue I am using for the shade coat of trousers of my Zulu War/VSF Brits.
My local model shop stocks only GW and Humbrol paints. I should perhaps mention that I paint from dark-to-light using the black undercoat method. For my base/shade coat I have been using Humbrol 15 Midnight Blue, then highlighting with GW Regal Blue.
These colours don't look quite right to me. Another significant problem is that the Humbrol 15 is a GLOSS paint which makes it hard with my poor eyesight to see where I should be putting the highlight coat over the top. ( I couldn't find any matt colour blue that is anywhere near deep enough)
Mixing colours doesn't work; if I try to mix the darkest blue I have with black, I do not get a deeper blue but instead just a grey-blue.
I have seen other miniatures painted in colours I like much better. So what is everyone else using?
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

My go to dark blue is the Foundry triad 111 Union Blue. These Zulu War Naval figures were painted with it to give you an idea. When you put the first two coats on its rather unimpressive but the top shade really brings it to life in my opinion.

I use Prussian Blue. Its not a Humbrol but I can see on their chart that they do one.

Think outside the box, and hit up one of your big box craft stores. You should be able to find a dark Prussian blue.

Otherwise, you can mail order Vallejos and Game Colour. I like using their Dark Prussian Blue as the shadow, Imperial Blue as the Mid tone, and then Prussian Blue to highlight.

Andrea Blue set No. 1, 3, 5, in that order works a treat! You will probably only find it online/Ebay.
