Curteys - better than I thought
« on: February 05, 2009, 07:36:24 PM »
I'd always been hesitant to get any miniatures from Curteys because I didn't like the bloated head syndrome. But I ordered some at their recent sale and now that I actually have them in my hands, the heads somehow don't look as huge anymore. Biggish, sure, but not beyond the bounds of what's acceptable to me.

So please don't dismiss Curteys out of hand as I had done until now. I don't want to promise the sculpting style will work for you, but I do think it's easy to get too hung up on the big heads when you only see them in photos and not in your hands or on the tabletop. Get a few test figures to judge for yourself.

Now I can use their Shang Nobles and Tibetan Nomads (the likes of which other companies don't produce) as pseudo-Asian warriors in swords and sorcery.

Hmmm.
Not convinced from the ones I've seen  :?

Perhaps you'll show some pics once you've painted them?  :)

The Mongols looked terrible in the WSS article about Genghis Khan.

I like them. Great to paint and very extensive ranges. Horses are dreadful and small though.

I picked up the peasant rabble and villagers at Vapnartak last weeekend and I was very impressed with them actually. They are a little chunky, but they will paint up a treat and be great for a bit of local colour.

Some of the soldiery looks a little stiff, I admit, and yes, the horses are not the best, but I can see myself buying a few more of these. The painted examples they had on their stand were a real seller for me. They look great, much better than the website pictures. (I think they are photographed from an angle that makes the heads look bigger, actually.)

I like my Curteys pirates. They look somewhat weird but I kinda like them. For some reason I can't explain I really enjoy painting them.

Dont I have a WAB army of these to paint, they are a little chunky and some of the detail is a bit soft but as already said I think they will paint up well

I have done about 150 Mongols so far, about 50 more to do (my wife bought me them for xmas a couple of years ago) and I also have a Sung army covering all the available codes plus Warring States, Han, Shang and Tibetans so I can vouch that at least for me they are a joy to paint. I cannot get on with the samurai though for some reason.

They dont seem to transfer to 2D in pictures as well as the 3D view in the flesh and you would never choose them as competition pieces but as wargaming figures they are fine.

Each to their own but I'm a fan.

I can't believe you put that, JB. I hope you were being sarcastic.  :?

As for the Mongols, I've seen Bear's Den and TAG Mongols in the flesh, not a pumpkinhead in sight, so I'll stick to them.  :)

Only a little bit.  :D  Couldn't help myself.

I do think they look better in the hand than in pictures for some reason, but each to their own. If we all liked the same stuff our games would be really boring.

True enough!
