Red Dawn Rises
« on: 16 August 2016, 09:59:18 AM »
I have just ordered Setting the East Ablaze and Red Dawn Rises so am committed to starting BoB now  ::)

No figures bought yet, but I am working on a list.  To help me avoid a false step, can someone tell me what I should be buying to use at least some of the scenarios in Red Dawn Rises?  Reds, obviously, but will I need just Whites or are there scenarios involving the Chinese, British and Emir of Bokhara, and does the Mad Baron make an appearance?

Similarly, is there any special terrain I should be thinking about ordering?

Thanks in anticipation.

All or any of the above.  Terrain wise, check out The League of Extraordinary Kriegpsielers posts.  I commissioned that terrain after visiting Central Asia.  And on return visits with my lads we used to shout out from the minibus, 'look that hill is just like one of Gary Chalks!'  So that stuff works for core central Asian games.  Further west or east it becomes progressively more European looking, with obvious differences in architecture and the like.

Good advice, although difficult to follow when you are enthusiastic about a new project!

My plan was to have three units of Red infantry (10 each) plus one of cavalry, officers/commissars and two machine guns.  If I get that, plus forces of similar size for the Chinese and either the British or Whites, would I be on the right lines?

If you are going to face the Reds off against the British, you will need probably 3 reds for every 2 British (especially if you are fielding British regulars-they tend to be the "Space Marines" of BoB  lol)

In my mind I'd stick with the core like you have planned
BUT make some headway into a special unit to spice up the whole thing even more

Scenery wise, I'd try and read into the rules or sources for something that will pop off the table
Everyone has woods, rivers or hills but mountains and crags and fissures and shallow graves...ahh!

Keep us posted
