Getting into BFG after GW's withdrawal?

Hi, all. Thanks to Menelduir, I have become interested in BFG. However, amassing out-of-production models and rulebooks could be quite an expensive proposition.

GW used to have certain Specialist Games rulesets available as PDFs, but the old links would now seem to be broken. Has anybody rescued them, and continued to make them available?

Honestly...I'd look at Dropfleet Commander before I'd touch BFG.  Some really cool design decisions, and excellent line of models.  I've never been much for them fancy "space fleet" games, but I could see myself getting into Dropfleet Commander.

I do think there is a large BFG community creating ships via 3D printing etc.

Can't help with the rules (although I'm sure they're archived somewhere, even the hard-to-find Armada book) but if I were to get back in again I'd either kitbash my own ships or use something else (most likely Spartan's Firestorm Armada range or the aforementioned Dropfleet stuff from Hawk when it comes out) as proxies.  I played Tyranids for years using Full Thrust Phalons and never cared, buying the insanely overpriced GW models on the secondary market these days is totally unappealing.

Sure would be nice if GW re-released the game as a Specialist box set with modern plastics, but it's a dangerous thing to wish for.  Most likely they'd give it a Dreadfleet treatment like they did to poor Man o'War, with no support beyond the one temporary release and beautiful models that are utterly out of scale with the original range.  That would truly suck.

Still; that 's what's to be expected I fear; they're bringing back Epic, but in 8mm instead of 6mm. So all the new stuff will be out of scale with the existing ranges there too...

Yet another reason for shrinking GW market share:  smaller independent companies doing their design aesthetic better than they do.
