Finding opponents
« on: October 16, 2016, 09:12:44 PM »
My brother moved to Harleston in Norfolk and now has a war games room with a large table, but his previous opponents live in London. Are there any sites that you'd recommend to him to locate local players. His interests are historical (Medieval, Napoleonic, SYW etc).

Thanks
If in doubt, fire everything!

Depending on which rules he prefers, he could try the various forums (fora?) for those rule sets.

He could put an advert in the local papers or in the local games or model shop. I once met a local wargamer in the magazine section of WH smith, he had just picked up Wargames Illustrated. So I asked him straight out if he was a wargamer. It was such a weird feeling, I felt like we were two deviants.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Facebook is a good resource for finding other gamers. A quick search gives me:

and:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/westnorfolkwargamers/

The pinned post "List of Clubs and gaming groups in Norfolk" in the first group seems pretty comprehensive. I wish I was that spoiled for choice for gaming groups!

It would be useful if we all made the effort to put our general locations in our forum profiles i.e. nearest town.

Even so, I am not aware of any way to show a list of users' locations, so you'd still be left keeping half an eye on forum posters' details as you browse threads.

Not to mention the folks who either don't want to disclose their location, or who put something jokey there like "Earth, Sol System" - which is probably why there isn't a search feature.

That's all I meant. Keeping an eye on forum posters' details as you browse threads. One of the guys I game with got in touch that way. I appreciate not everyone wants to disclose their location but it you are one those, who like me, is struggling to find opponents then it seems like a good idea.

It was on another forum, but that's exactly the way I got into contact with my first regular opponent! And through him, I ended up with my entire current group of gaming buddies too...  :)

I find it helpful in general personally, as it's also useful if you are on the trading forum for example.

I remember one chap (called Simon I think?) who was kind enough to drop the models in to me at my flat on his way home after work rather than posting them. It was a kind gesture, and I appreciated it. :)

I used to live in Harleston but moved to Ipswich 4 years ago. There are a couple of clubs in Norwich (Aftermath is one http://www.aftermath-club.co.uk/) and one at New Buckenham (http://www.newbuckenhamwargamers.net/) which isn't too far but I have not been to them so I don't know what either of them are like.

I gamed in Norwich with a small group of friends. They only do historical games and that certainly includes Napoleonic and SYW along with WW2 etc. I could probably put your brother in touch with them if you wanted but games would be in Norwich as a central point, although not a club they do hire a hall every other Monday evening in Blofield just outside Norwich.

Your brother's games room might not get much use with these options though!

However, my regular opponent in Ipswich, his brother lives in Diss and games, so again I could possibly put your brother in touch with him if you like although I think he's not so much of a historical gamer.

Also, I could probably squeeze in the occasional trip to Harleston for a game, it's not too far. Feel free to PM me.

I game at New Buckenham Historical Wargamers, a great bunch of nutters :) There's a link to the groups facebook page in my sig block. SYW game this friday and three day huge D-Day game the weekend of 28th-30th Oct.
We play all periods of historical wargames tending not to use tournament/point based rule sets (ie Bolt Action). If that and sci/fi and fantasy is more what you are interested in try Aftermath in Norwich, or of course, both.

Tony.
