28mm French Dragoons for Sharp Practice
« on: April 30, 2017, 03:33:52 AM »
I recently finished these dragoons for my Sharpe Practice 2 Peninsular forces. The mounted figures are all the recent release from Perry, and are beautiful sculpts - and as far as I know the only ones which show Dragoons in the campaign dress common in the Peninsular war. I'm really tempted to get some of the elite company figures, with their bearskin hats, and painting up a group of them.

The foot figures are the excellent Paul Hicks sculpts for Brigade games. Paul's Napoleonic stuff is amazing, some of the most characterful figures around IMHO - the Spanish Guerrillas and the Sharpe character figures he sculpted are absolutely amazing.

I painted these up as the 17e Regiment, which claimed to have captured a British colour at the Battle of Albuera in 1811, however from my research it looks like all of the colours were captured by the Vistula Lancers. The main reason I painted them as from the 17e though, is the pink facings. My history students always find it amusing that before the Victorian era, pink was actually seen as quite a masculine colour, and was used frequently on military uniforms.

P.S. - apologies to anyone who has already seen these on the SP facebook page.
Ben

Ben, always happy to look at your work for a second time, such lovely painting. I am just about to undercoat some of the plastic dismounted ones for my 3rd and 4th units of dragoons.
Cheers,

Ben

I utterly hate you!  I've been looking at my French Dragoons and dreading painting them.  Then you make it look easy.

In order to make amends, I think you should post these to me.  You'd see them regularly on Lard Island News, so in a way they'd still be yours...sort of... ;)

Top job indeed. I already have the BG dismounted figures - which are every bit as good as you say - and their mounted Perry colleagues will be in the post soon.
