Starting Zulu War British
« on: November 12, 2017, 09:13:18 PM »
With the release of Death in the Dark Continent, I've decided to push my African gaming back from WWI into the 19th Century.  I didn't have a large budget for this, so have gone with discounted Warlord plastics with a few Empress figures thrown in.

I still have a few more units on the painting desk, but I'm hoping this will give me a good skirmish force.

Thanks for looking!

I like these - very nice bright colours.

I'm doing something similar, but in 10mm.

They look great. I have a bunch of Black Tree and newer Foundry that are very nice. The Black Tree are worth looking at as they have almost permanent sales and the figures are much better than their pictures give credit.

Good choice, that man.

Chris,
You have my most sincere sympathy on the smuggling aspect of the hobby. In my case I also have to smuggle all of the boxes and packaging material out as well! It is a hard life being an illicit Chinese Warlord General. I expect having several impis of Zulu in hiding in your household will lead eventually either to "imaginitive" explanations or hard knocks. Either will likely serve you well on the battlefield.

I hate to say it but- I find zulus boring. (as much as I love the film, and the period of history, everything). Luckily I have to only paint the British, my friend is going to supply the barefoot feathery chaps.

Joekano, good start! If you are going to stick with Warlord-Empress size figures (BTD are a tad bigger) then you should check out Rapier miniatures, they have a nice compatible range including zulus, artillery and NNC, not expensive.

I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

2019 Painting Challenge :
figures bought: 500+
figures painted: 57
9 vehicles painted
4 terrain pieces scratchbuilt

You are welcome, If I not had already bought all my Zulu war Brits from BTD and Redoubt I would have gone with these mixed with Empress. They are nice, the photos don't do them justice.

I hate to say it but- I find Zulus boring....

I had a Zulu student once who was determined to become a tap-dancer after he'd satisfied his parents and got his degree. He was always the one who kept the rest of the class waiting if we did an away trip. I'm tempted to name an impi after him every time I expand my Zulu army.
